To restart an M chip Mac in Recovery Mode:

  1. Power off the Mac
  2. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears
  3. Select the option you need

 

 

Press and remain holding the key combos as you turn on or restart the Mac.

Command+R : macOS system recovery 

Option+Command+R -or- Shift+Option+Command+R: macOs system recovery over the internet

Option/ALT : Startup Manager (to boot up from a USB device)

Option+Command+R : Update the firmware (when a new SSD is not showing in Disk Utility)

Option+Command+P+R : Reset the NVRAM or PRAM

D : Apple Diagnostics (Will not work if firmware password is in use)

Option+D : Apple Diagnostics over the internet (Disabled when firmware password is in use)

Shift : Startup in Safe mode (Will not work if firmware password is in use)

Command+S : Startup in single user mode (Will not work if firmware password is in use, or in macOS Mojave and later)

T : Startup in target disk mode (Will not work if firmware password is in use)

Command+V : Startup in verbose mode (Will not work if firmware password is in use)

Eject -or- F12 -or- Mouse button -or- Trackpad button : Will eject removable media (Will not work if firmware password is in use)

N : Startup from a NetBoot Server if supported (Will not work if firmware password is in use)

Option+N : Restore default boot image from a server (Will not work if firmware password is in use)
